The original WarCraft game might have started it all but the second game in the series, WarCraft II: Tides of Darkness, was the game that really put Blizzard Entertainment on the map as one of the greatest game studios in the world. Tides of Darkness (ToD) sold over 5 million copies world wide and was the best selling game ever of its time and you can understand why because it really is classic in every sense of the word.

The thing that amazed people the most about WarCraft II was its epic intense storyline which was unlike anything that had ever been attempted before. The game manual that came with the game also contained detailed stories (written by Chris Metzen) explaining the world of the game (which is heavily inspired by Tolkien and LotR) and what happened in the previous game. The storyline can then progress in two ways depending on your choice of which race to play as (The Orcish Horde and The Human Alliance). No matter which choice you make you cannot help but be astounded by the brilliance of the story it really was top notch and the game still retains some measure playability today unlike its predecessor which is heavily dated. I won't give away the details of the game people will just have to figure it out for themselves by playing the game.

The graphics, sound and game-play has been updated greatly for the second WarCraft game and it even features (by today's standards) rather simple 3D movie sequences which was pretty amazing for its time. Also when you click the units more than a few times they start getting aggravated with you and some of their comments are simply hilarious. This, I think, is a great way of adding some comic relief to a serious game and it is something many other RTS games have copied since.

All in all WarCraft II: Tides of Darkness is a classic game that remains entertaining even today.
